Google Expands Access to AI-Powered Video Editor ‘Vids’ for All Users

August 27, 2025 — Google has officially made its AI-powered video editing platform, Vids, available to all users. Previously restricted to Google Workspace and AI subscription plan holders, the app is now broadly accessible, offering templates, stock footage, and a selection of AI-driven features to simplify video creation.

Launched in 2024, Google Vids is the newest addition to the company’s Workspace productivity suite. It is designed to help businesses, educators, and content creators quickly assemble professional video presentations using AI-assisted storyboarding, scene suggestions, stock images, and background audio.

While the free version includes most of the core editing tools, it does not yet provide the latest AI innovations rolling out today. These premium tools include AI-generated avatars that can deliver scripted messages, as well as an image-to-video tool capable of turning still photos into short video clips.

At present, users can choose from 12 pre-built avatars, each with a unique appearance and voice, to narrate their scripts. However, creating a personalized avatar that mimics a user’s own likeness — a feature already offered by some competitors like Zoom — is not yet available in Google Vids.

Another highlight is the 8-second image-to-video generator, which allows creators to animate product images or brand visuals into short, engaging clips. In addition, Google has introduced an AI transcript trimmer that automatically cuts filler words and long pauses from recorded videos, streamlining the editing process for presenters and trainers.

Google believes these advancements will dramatically reduce the time and cost of producing professional-grade content. As Vishnu Sivaji, Product Director at Google, explained: “A 10-minute video with real actors can take months and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Vids enables teams to create and scale such content far more efficiently.”

With this expansion, Google Vids is positioned as a powerful tool for businesses, educators, and marketers looking to build training modules, product demos, and customer support videos with speed and ease — all while leveraging the latest in AI technology.
